Yuming Hong, a diving instructor at Green Island today, was the first to discover that "Big Mushroom" broke at its base and fell over on its side due to typhoon Meranti's 15 meter high waves. The microporous coral, was estimated to be over one thousand years old. Ten meters tall and 5.5 meters in diameter, it is said to be the largest single coral known. Hong said the coral toppled in the direction of the north, and the head is now pressing on one of the small pore corals next to it.

After the news spread, Internationally renowned diving photographer Yorko Summer said that it's Taiwan's most famous marine treasure, which he has visited many times, and he felt very sad to hear this news.

Every year, thousands of divers pilgrimage to Green Island, many with the primary intent to admire Big Mushroom.
